    SNA

    Swapan

I have some social network data and I wanted to compute some basic metrics like Centrality (degree) etc.. I am assuming Oracle Spatial/Graph option supports this but I can't seem to find any example or white paper on doing SNA (Social Network Analysis). Any literature or help/pointers is very much appreciated. I am currently on 11.2.0.3 version of the database.

          Hi Swapan,

Degree centrality is rather straightforward to compute with a SPARQL query (or SEM_MATCH based SQL).

          e.g.

          select ?s  (count(?o) as ?out_degree)

          where {?s  :friendOf  ?o }

          group by ?s

What other metrics do you need?

          Thanks,

The other metric that we are looking for is transitivity.

Also, does this mean I need to model data in a specific format or something for the above query to work? Do you have any literature that I can use as a reference to implement?

              Hi Swapan,

Transitivity can easily be modeled using owl:TransitiveProperty. For example, if you have a transitive relationship ":relatedTo",

you can add the following assertions to your graph (ontology). The native inference engine of Oracle will take care of finding

              the hidden relationships.

              :relatedTo  rdf:type owl:TransitiveProperty

              :relatedTo  rdf:type owl:ObjectProperty

The following document may be useful to you.

              OWL Concepts

In addition, you can take a look at the property path in SPARQL 1.1.

              http://www.w3.org/TR/sparql11-query/#propertypaths

              Hope it helps,

It looks like we are interested in the closeness centrality (not degree). Is this still possible to compute ?

It is possible. Let's take this offline. Please email me at alan dot wu at oracle dot com.
