          Hi,

          1. Check your NLS_DATABASE_PARAMETERS

          2. One more thing I hope your old character is subset of current character set -- hope you verified it

QQ-- what is your db version

Oracle Database cannot startup in an Edition session.... what's reason you  are seeing this ? what is the background of this task ?

Hope you may done upgrade ?

          https://docs.oracle.com/database/121/UPGRD/upgrade.htm#UPGRD52742

refer to section 3.10.5 and 3.10.6

Changing character set like that is not supported in release 12 and (according to the docs) is no longer possible. Perhaps you have just proved this. You are meant to use this facility Database Migration Assistant for Unicode Guide - Contents perhaps it can recover the situation.

JohnWatson2 has already pointed you in the right direction.

As an aside, localhost is the hostname for your computer https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Localhost The GUI that lives at localhost:5500/em (it will live at the hostname used by the listener, for me it's something different. Additionally it could be on any port- it's just a little config) is called Enterprise Manager. If you didn't provide a screenshot we would probably have no idea what you were talking about.

Please use the correct names in the future as it helps us to help you, although in this case you got lucky.

In addition to what JohnWatson2 says, you also look read this article for this to lookout for

***Moderator action (Timo) removed the link to MOSC content. Gbenga Ajakaye  the Oracle Community Guidelines  clearly tells that posing MOSC content is not allowed.***

That website is a copy and paste from a MOS article, it violates their agreement with Oracle. By linking to it you are also violating it. Please remove the link. Instead the OP can use MOS to lookup the doc id 1272374.1 . If OP doesn't have a support contract then they can't read the information in it.

What's the reason you have changed the character set and does the em console was working prior to before ?
