          Dude!

You may have set another default kernel than index 0. I suggest to verify the following:

          # grubby --info=ALL

The latest kernel might/should be at index 0 - 1st entry. Then check what you have configured as default:

          # grubby --default-index

The result is probably not 0. Then change it to 0 using:

          # grubby --set-default 0

Keep in mind that UEKR4 might have been set as default for some reason. AFAIK, UEKR5 does not support kernel drivers installed by currently available Oracle Grid Infrastructure 19c (19.3) or earlier.

            Dear Dude,

VirtualBox Guest Additions: Kernel headers not found for target kernel

4.1.12-112.16.4.el7uek.x86_64. Please install them and execute

actually the problem is this why isn't target kernel header not installed in the first place. I was thinking of upgrading the kernel and the problem will go away. the problem is still there most likely due to kernel-uek 5 is not supported in 12.2

            thanks

              Dude!

Why didn't you mentioned what you are trying to accomplish in in the first place? Problems installing VirtualBox additions is not a matter of upgrading UEKR4 to UEKR5, nor is there any connection to 12.2 GI driver compatibility. It's also not a problem of not having kernel-headers installed.

Try yum install kernel-uek-devel-$(uname -r) instead.

It would also make sense to change your post subject to "Kernel-headers not found installing VirtualBox guest additions).

I'm sorry about it. I'm too focus on the upgrading kernel-uek.

how do I change the post to Kernel-headers not found installing VirtualBox guest additions)

                [root@ol75-12201-se-client ~]# yum install kernel-uek-devel-$(uname -r)

You need to enable the software repository for ol7_UEKR4. Try the following:

                  yum install yum-utils

                    Dear Dude,

                    after what is done:

                    [root@ol75-12201-se-client ~]# rpm -qa kernel-uek

                    kernel-uek-4.1.12-124.27.1.el7uek.x86_64

                    kernel-uek-4.1.12-112.16.4.el7uek.x86_64

                    [root@ol75-12201-se-client ~]# rpm -qa kernel-uek-devel

                    kernel-uek-devel-4.14.35-1844.5.3.el7uek.x86_64

                    kernel-uek-devel-4.14.35-1844.4.5.el7uek.x86_64

looks like now kernel-uek and kernel-uek-devel has entirely different version.

looks like kernel-uek-devel-4.1.12-112.16.4.el7uek.x86_64 not in https://yum.oracle.com/repo/OracleLinux/OL7/UEKR4/x86_64/index.html

                      • 8. Re: Not able to upgrade kernel-uek
                        Dude!

                        [root@ol75-12201-se-client ~]# rpm -qa kernel-uek

                        kernel-uek-4.1.12-124.27.1.el7uek.x86_64

                        kernel-uek-4.1.12-112.16.4.el7uek.x86_64

There certainly is kernel-uek-devel for the latest UEKR4 pached version. Please see:

                        # yum list kernel-uek-devel

                        Loaded plugins: fs-snapshot, ulninfo

                        Available Packages

                        kernel-uek-devel.x86_64                  4.1.12-124.27.1.el7uek                  ol7_UEKR4

What you have done is to set the default kernel to the previous version  4.1.12-112.16.4 and hence yum install ...$(uname-r) will attempt to fetch that version, which is no longer in ol7_UEKR4 and moved to archive_ol7_UEKR4. You probably do not have that repository enabled, but you don't need it. Simply set the default kernel to version 4.1.12-124.27.1.el7uek and it will work.

If you need a permanent fix to make the latest UEKR4 kernel the default kernel (index 0) you need to remove the UEKR5 kernel.

To add to my last comment: Here's what should work in your scenario:

Start the system specifying a non UEK kernel from the Grub boot menu. e.g. RHCK.

                          Then do the following:

                          yum -y remove "kernel-uek*"

                          yum -y install yum-utils

                          yum-config-manager --disable ol7_UEKR5 ol7_UEKR5_archive

                          yum-config-manager --enable ol7_UEKR4

                          yum -y install kernel-uek

                          systemctl reboot

                          yum -y install kernel-uek-devel-$(uname -r)

The runtime RPM package and the development RPM package (*-devel) are two separate items.  You can install either,  both, or neither because getting the development packages does not cause yum(8) to install its runtime.

this is strange my current uek is 4.1.12-112

                                but when I do a grubby --info=ALL

it does not list it 4.1.12-112

I recently moved my boot partition to LVM. Will the migration of boot partition affect this?

                                thanks

                                  Dude!

Did you follow my instructions as outlined, i.e. booted the RHCK kernel prior to removing the current UEK kernel?

I have not tried it, but it may not be possible to remove the current running kernel, and your output does not show that 4.1.12-112.16.4.el7uek.x86_64 was removed.

                                  Removing:

                                  kernel-uek            x86_64   4.1.12-124.27.1.el7uek       @ol7_UEKR4   160 M

                                  kernel-uek-devel      x86_64   4.14.35-1844.4.5.el7uek      @ol7_UEKR5    63 M

                                  kernel-uek-devel      x86_64   4.14.35-1844.5.3.el7uek      @ol7_UEKR5    63 M

                                  kernel-uek-firmware   noarch   4.1.12-124.27.1.el7uek       @ol7_UEKR4   2.9 M

Your grub boot menu (grubby --info=ALL), however, does not show 4.1.12-112.16.4.el7uek.x86_64 at all, yet it booted this version?!

I recently moved my boot partition to LVM. Will the migration of boot partition affect this?

I'm not aware that any system can boot from an LVM partition - no PC BIOS has LVM support built-in.

I suggest to try again, as I mentioned in my previous post and verify that all UEK kernels are removed, but make sure to reboot the system using the RHCK kernel (3.10) first.
