    VIP Configuration Assistant fails

    440500
I am installing the Oracle 10g RAC on VMware

I have followed the instructions to the letter twice - and both times when vipca runs - it hits the same error CRS-0215.

The ora.raclinux1.vip.trc files has the following errors - but I am not sure what is wrong:

      Interface eth0 checked failed (host=raclinux1.us.oracle.com)
Invalid parameters, or failed to bring up VIP (host=raclinux1.us.oracle.com)
      THU MAR 17 16:09:37 2005
      clsrcexecut: cmd = /opt/oracle/CRS10g/bin/racgeut 54 /opt/oracle/CRS10g/bin/racgvip start raclinux1
      THU MAR 17 16:09:37 2005
      clsrcexecut: rc = 1, time = 9.800s
      Interface eth0 checked failed (host=raclinux1.us.oracle.com)

      Can you assist in troubleshooting?

      Thanks,

well.. I would need more information, I don't want to guess too much.

          1. redhat or SuSE?
          2. version of 10g, 10.1.0.2 or 10.1.0.3?
          3. can you ping raclinux1?
          4. can you access the outside world from inside the VM?
          5. output of mii-tool
          6. output of ifconfig

          good luck,

          Saar.

            Sorry -

            RedHat EL 3 AS Update2

            Oracle 10.1.0.3

I can ping raclinux1 (it is at 192.168.203.11)

I can access the outside world - I set up a third VM NIC - using an internal network IP and our DNS server

            mii-tool output:

              ok, much better...

I take it the ping on raclinux1 returns valid packets, not just translates the IP address... (just making sure)

Why would you need to add another NIC to access external to host OS? You should be able to use eth0, the DNS/gateway should point to 192.168.203.2. Is there anything else you changed as you said you followed instructions to the letter :-) ? please provide:

              1. output ipconfig on windows host.
              2. cat /etc/resolv.conf
              3. netstat -r

try to rename mii-tool to something else, or edit $ORA_CRS_HOME/bin/racgvip and change MIITOOL=/sbin/mii-tool to MIITOOL=/sbin/mii-tool-XXX

I take it the mii-tool rename didn't work?

well... I really suggest for people to go through the materials exactly as they are first time around..

in Stage 1 we request that you change the host subnets:

                  http://www.oracle.com/technology/tech/linux/vmware/cookbook/stage1_vmware.html

                  output should look like this:

Ethernet adapter VMware Network Adapter VMnet1:
                  Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
                  IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 10.10.10.1
                  Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
                  Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . :

Ethernet adapter VMware Network Adapter VMnet8:
                  Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
                  IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.203.1
                  Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
                  Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . :

can you ping 10.10.10.11? Did you use the skeleton VM or created your own VM? are you using bridged or NAT or hostonly?

I suggest you take a few minutes and try to align the environment with our method, you don't need the 3rd NIC..

                  Saar.

I have VMWare already and it was configured in it's default install config -

I did not realize the the cookbooks required a different config for the VM network.

I have modified my VM network - and all my errors are now gone.

Thanks for your indulgance for questions.

                        Hi

I am facing the same problem with Oracle RAC installation on VMWARE slices.

These are the answers to your question:

I have SUSE LInux 10 on both the slices
The Oracle version is 10g Release 2 (10.2) for Linux x86
                        I can ping machine RAC1
I can access outside world from both the slices
The result from ifconfig from one of the VM slice is:
