                  - What are the tasks of a Core DBA
The definition changes based on the company hiring the DBA.

However, Oracle has a good set of job responsibility descriptions in Chapter 1 of the Oracle Administrator's Guide under the sections

Types of Oracle Database Users, and
                  Tasks of a Database Administrator

The document can be found in the 10g Release 2 document library at http://www.oracle.com/pls/db102/homepage

                  Changes based on the location.
                  - Eligibility for the Core DBA Jobs
Changes based on the need of the potential employer. And your ability to convince an employer that you are capable of doing the job.

In some locations, convincing employers is easier if you get some Oracle Certification - see the certification link at http://education.oracle.com and the general certification information at http://www.prometric.com

I don't think there's a strict definition for the term "Core DBA".

But roughly, as I understanded, it the DBA focusing on the database itself, comparing application DBAs who take care web server, application server and database server.

                    Typical core DBA tasks:

                    Backup and recovery.
Install database software and set up database.
                    Performance tuning.
                    Database monitoring.
                    Trouble shooting database issues.

AFAIK, is a Database Administrator administering the database 100% of his time and he is responsible for all the activities related to the database and keep it high and running trouble free.

                        Hey,

That is, for instance, Oracle version of Core DBA tasks.

You can search this forum. As I remember a couple of days ago there was similar discussion topic.
On my opinion three most important tasks include:
                        1. Backup and Recovery (Disaster strategy planning, recovery procedures preparing, following to the accepted backup and recovery policies etc)
                        2. Data protection (security planning, monitoring, taking proper actions on security violation etc)
                        3. Availability of the database.
And also ongoing every day activities are also important for any DBA like Oracle installation, upgrade, space provisioning, monitoring, performance tuning etc.

                        Best Regards,
                        Alex

IMO, a core DBA is a professional who is technically prepared to perform the tasks described in the oracle curriculum dba administration courses:

Oracle Database 10g: Administration Workshop I,

Oracle Database 10g: Administration Workshop II

"When I use a word," Humpty Dumpty said in rather a scornful tone, "it means just what I choose it to mean -- neither more nor less."

And so it is with job titles. Any given job title means only and exactly what the organization chooses it to mean.

Even though we work in a technical industry, not every term you see has a universal, fixed, immutable, technical meaning.
