    Hello,

Yep, should help to stimulate a bit of interest amongst the community.

Although it's not exactly clear to me if it's only open to the German market or Worldwide?

It would be great if it was world wide.. 5,000 euro is equivalent to a million dollars these days. :)

Suddenly I know what it's like to feel outsourced. Dancing for change in a foreign currency that's worth more than USD.

You know, that's a good question. I was thinking that same thing myself. However, Patrick should know, since he's one of the judges.

As well, if you were in the U.S. and won, I'm not sure how much it's going to benefit you to be promoted by Heise, Mittelstandswiki and on the German Oracle General Business Sites. Sort of like someone from Germany being promoted in the Tradin Times. ;)

Patrick should know, but he doesn't. But he has already sent a mail to a person who should know :-)

About the benefit of promotion. That would probably not be so helpful for a foreigner, but the EUR 5.000 would still be a very good argument to participate :-)

There will be a clarification about participation (worldwide, ...) and language of the application at the begining of next week. Because the competition was initiated by Oracle Germany and the promotion will be in Germany it is expected that the APEX application is written in German.

Well, that's solved easily enough. I could just write my application in my native English, churn it through Babelfish for translations, and I'm done. Perfectly translated German application! :)

    Hello,

Just a thought (and as an extension to Joel's comment), it would be a shame I think to restrict it to only those people who can speak/read/code in German.

A good application is a good application, regardless of the language it's in (unless of course the aim is to make a very German market focussed application).

As an alternative, perhaps open it up to all with a view that the winning application (or perhaps any of the good entries) are then translated using the (already excellent) multi-lingual abilities within APEX.

This is then very much a win-win-win, as -

    1) It opens up the number of people who can enter the competition (generating more publicity and awareness of APEX).

    2) It also showcases just how easily an APEX application can be made multi-lingual (perhaps leading to an Oracle magzine/other publication article).

    3) It expands the potential user-base of the winning entries (surely no bad thing?).

As this is a community/freeware type application, I'm sure there are many people in this forum who wouldn't mind pitching in helping with translations where needed.

    Just a thought.

    Hi John,

most time the intention of such an awards is not the actual application, ... Very often the intention is "just" to push a specific product.

In this case the the award is donated by Oracle Germany. So I think they are basically targeting the German speaking market and want to make Oracle APEX aware to a bigger and new audience, especially in the small and medium-sized business area. That's why they have also partnered with a well known German computer magazine. I don't really see how it would be beneficial for the marketing department of Oracle Germany that it's a worldwide competition.

But I'm only in the jury and not really involved into the planning, but I have written to a person who should know, so that this point is clarified.

Oh sure, I agree...but the end result is a 'freeware' application too.

Well, just my opinion, but there are lots of people in Germany who don't speak German too ;)

As you say, I guess it depends exactly who it's trying to target.

Don't get me wrong, I think it's a great idea...any publicity for APEX is good publicity as far as I'm concerned.

    Hello,

I wonder from which department in Oracle Germany this is coming...

Oracle wants already for a longer time to get a bigger part of the small and medium-sized business. Doing something like this and partnering with a magazine is a way to do that. It's nice to see they promote APEX, but at the end I believe they want to get more feeling with that part of business and maybe sell an Oracle database. Of course APEX is ideal for that, it can compete with php, .net, access etc. Can you think they would do something like that with ADF? ;-)

I'm not surprised this is coming from the Germany Oracle part as they are already a long time believer of APEX and see all the advantages of it, also for the licensing part.

I'm curious about the end result.

    Regards,
    Dimitri

HOw do we find out for sure if this is open to all. If not, then a possibility for another more widely based effort in the near future?

Got some clarification from Oracle Germany.

The contest is open to everybody as long as the final application is a business application and it is in German.
