Index daemon indicates that catalogue updates have been disabled

I tried performing a catalogue restore of a file and got the message:

"no instance of "<file>" exist in a cataloged backup"

I've done some digging and it looks like the index daemon has not been updating the catalogue for certain host backups. In the index daemon log, for certain hosts there are lines such as:

"warning: updates are disabled for <host>"

I've not conciously disabled updates for these hosts. Does anybody know how this might have come about, and more importantly how I can enable catalogue updates for these hosts again?
