A great loss indeed. I was sort of shocked this morning when I entered the office and found it all over the Oracle blogs I read. I was fortunate to have the pleasure of attending one of his sessions at Oracle Open World this year and was in several hands on labs.
In times like these, I feel it best not to think of what the community has lost but instead hang on to the good memories and the good that has been contributed to the community.

Oh my God !...Carl, Anton, Joel and I had a great time at the OOW...Its so hard to believe...Carl was so animated and excited when he was explaining the 4.0 features in the demo grounds...Such a sad news..
I will miss you man..
The quantity and quality of the posts in this thread only begin to mark the impact that Carl had on this community. While I never knew him personally, I feel like I did know him from all of his great efforts in the Apex community. From what others have said, he sounds like someone I would have really liked.
My thoughts are with his daughter and family. Peace to you all.
And because Carl appeared to be a Simpson's fan....this isn't goodbye, we'll just say smell you later.
