Anyone taken an announcment portlet and added a section of news articles? Basically take an announcement portlet and at bottom of content space, put in a set of new articles?

Yep! We do something along those lines for a few custom templates we've created.

For example, we have an employee of the month portlet.
Toward the top it has a static introduction header image and a brief intro to the concept and how they are determined. Followed by the content items (5) listing the employee names. clicking the name opens the news article to read more details.
Below the content items we have more static content - the nomination form which opens a studio submission form.

We do a similar one for a Photo Gallery styled portlet.

    Whoa!!

So you also have a Studio data entry portlet within the Publisher server portlet?

    We must talk more!!

Was it difficult to put this together?

yep! It was actually super simple to do.
Making the entire portlet couldn't have taken more than 4-5 minutes.

For the studio data submission all you need to do is create a record browser portlet (or any other windowed submission portlet). Open a new record, grab the URL for that window, and create it as a link on the news/announcement portlet.
    Easy as cake:)

If you want to email me I'd be happy to setup a webex to go over the code and give you a demo to make sure we are on the same page.
