Every 2nd request from WTC fails

Hi there,

We are using WLS 10.0.1 integrated with Tuxedo 6.5 and have this strange situation where every second request sent from WLS to Tuxedo fails with "TPESYSTEM(12):0:0:TPED_MINVAL(0):QMNONE(0):0". There is no other associated message.

Our call sequence consists of:

ApplicationToMonitorInterface connection = tuxedoConnectionFactory.getTuxedoConnection();
Reply reply = connection.tpcall(requestMapper.getServiceName(), requestMapper.getTypedFmlBuffer(),
ApplicationToMonitorInterface.TPNOAUTH | ApplicationToMonitorInterface.TPNOTIME);
...
process reply
...
connection.tpterm();

The tpcall is throwing a TPException on every second invocation. The amount of time (seconds or minutes) that passes between invocations seems to be irrelevent. I've tried various combinations of flags passed to the tpcall, including zero, with no apparent difference.

I turned up WTC logging to try and troubleshoot the issue. Log fragments are pasted below.

Note that the same reader thread "ExecuteThread: '4'" appears to be used for both calls, suggesting that they are both making use of the same TCP connection.

A tcpdump of both calls reveals (apparently complete) outgoing request and incoming reply data in both cases. However, it looks as though WTC gets its input stream out of sync and (possibly) reads left over data from the 1st call. WTC ditches the connection when the 2nd call fails, so the 3rd call starts off with a brand new connection again.

Any ideas?

Please excuse the bulk, but here is the trace from the successful call:

    Hi

    Did you check ULOG on Tuxedo 6.5 site? If WLS 10 conects to Tuxedo 6.5 you must turn on special Flag on WTC local access point definition. It is called "Interoperate" and should have a value YES. Did you do that?

    Thanks,

    We already have that flag set to "Yes", otherwise it does not work at all.

    Any other ideas?

    Hi,
    Can you post the tcpdump traces of a good and a bad call? What I see in the trace is that WTC thinks Tuxedo responded with a TPESYSTEM error. In general TPESYSTEM errors should generate an entry in the Tuxedo ULOG, although for Tuxedo 6.5 there may be places where that doesn't happen. Have you examined the Tuxedo ULOG to look for any information related to these requests? Also, just to be clear, if you issue the same request 6 times, you are saying that requests 1, 3, and 5 succeed, but requests 2, 4, and 6 fail? Also, can you post you WTC configuration? Finally what platform and rolling patch are you running on Tuxedo?

    Hi Todd,

    Thanks for responding.

    -----
    The Tuxedo developer here has provided me with the following information:

    The Tuxedo version is 6.5 and the patch level as seen in the last line of $TUXDIR/udataobj/patchlev file is "389. CR093934 TUX 6.5 > HP-UX 11 64-bit /Domain is unable to connect to 32-bit domains"

    The OS, Tuxedo is running on is: "HP-UX B.11.11 U 9000/800 485721183 unlimited-user license"

    In the Tuxedo ULOG file, I can see that the MTS service has received the request from WTC and the response being logged as well, without any error. However immediately after the request is completed, error messages is logged. The extract of this message is shown below:

    130843.focdevapph001!GWTDOMAIN.4780: LIBGWT_CAT:1130: INFO: Disconnected from domain (domainid=<WTC_OBF>)

    The TPESYSTEM was generated by WTC because the MAGIC number in the buffer does not match the expected MAGIC number. When did this symptom started to appear? Did you ever have a successful simple tpcall() using STRING buffer in your environment? How about did you ever have a successful simple tpcall() using FML32 buffer in your environment before?

    This is new code and a new environment. It has always behaved this way.

    I will try to organise a test call that just uses a String buffer.

    Thanks

    Hi,

    It would appear you've run across a bug in WTC, although I can't be certain of that. It is a little weird as what you are trying to do is done by thousands of customers without difficulty. My suggestion at this point would be to open a support case with Oracle Customer Support.

    I had a similar problem the last year.
    I solved it with this between every call:

    tuxedoConnection = tuxedoConnectionFactory.getTuxedoConnection();

    It definitely is not required to call tuxedoConnectionFactory.getTuxedoConnection() after every request. If that did solve the problem, you might want to check to see if somehow the field you are holding the connection in is getting overwritten or initialized between calls.

    As it happens, I found that this problem only seems to manifest itself when the code is run from a generic WLS install (running on my development Mac). The same code runs fine when running in a Linux WLS environment. It's otherwise the same version of WLS. The Tuxedo config was copied and pasted from the Mac to the Linux install, so I'm sure that the configuration is the same.

    Cheers,

    Hi Steve,

    Are you using the exact same WTC configuration in both environments? Also, what JVM/JDK are using on your Mac?

    It's the stock Apple JVM/JDK:

    java version "1.5.0_20"
    Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.5.0_20-b02-315)
    Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 1.5.0_20-141, mixed mode, sharing)

    MacOS X is essentially BSD unix under the hood.

    As I mentioned, I copied the Tuxedo configuration from Mac config.xml to Linux config.xml, so I'm sure that it is the same.

    Thanks
