Oracle Communicator unable to connect to OWLCS server

I have the OWLCS managed server running on a linux server, all apps including persistence are up and running.
I went through the configuration steps in section 5 of the Oracle WebLogic Communication Services Installation Guide - 11g Release 1 (11.1.1) (except for the ThirdPartyCall mbean step because the ThirdPartyCall.xml file does not exist for some reason)

I successfully created a user using sash - the user can be seen in the console.
Oracle Communicator is installed on a Windows PC that can ping the OWLCS host.
I have tried various settings in the OC network tab, as recommended by the OWLCS install doc and other threads on this forum, but none make any difference.

When I login to the Communicator it doesn't connect - it just says 'connecting to <server-name>' in the top right all of the time.
Any ideas?
Thanks

    Here are a few things you can check:

    - Is OWLCS listening on the SIP port for connections? netstat -a | grep 5060
    - From your client machine, can you open a socket connection to port 5060 or your server? telnet <server-host> 5060
    If the server is listening on port 5060 and you are unable to connect, you might have a firewall between your server and client
    - Has your client been configured correctly?
    - In preferences dialog, make sure:
    - Use a proxy server is checked
    - Proxy server is configured to be your server running OWLCS
    - XDMS host is set to be the hostname of the server running OWLCS
    - XDMS port is the listen port of the managed server (8001 by default)

    Thank you for the reply.

    - Is OWLCS listening on the SIP port for connections? netstat -a | grep 5063
    I am using 5063 (multiple network cards/IPs so multiple sip and sips channels)

    # netstat -a | grep 5063
    tcp 0 0 blinux09.cedarhr.com:5063 *:* LISTEN
    udp 0 0 blinux09.cedarhr.com:5063 *:*

    - From your client machine, can you open a socket connection to port 5063 or your server? telnet <server-host> 5063
    If the server is listening on port 5063 and you are unable to connect, you might have a firewall between your server and client

    Telnet is not running on the OWLCS server.
    netstat -ltnup | grep 506
    tcp 0 0 ::ffff:192.168.222.109:5061 :::* LISTEN 22832/java
    tcp 0 0 ::ffff:10.10.11.109:5062 :::* LISTEN 22832/java
    tcp 0 0 ::ffff:10.0.11.69:5063 :::* LISTEN 22832/java
    tcp 0 0 ::ffff:192.168.222.109:5065 :::* LISTEN 22832/java
    tcp 0 0 ::ffff:10.10.11.109:5066 :::* LISTEN 22832/java
    tcp 0 0 ::ffff:10.0.11.69:5067 :::* LISTEN 22832/java
    tcp 0 0 :::1522 :::* LISTEN 15060/tnslsnr
    udp 0 0 ::ffff:192.168.222.109:5061 :::* 22832/java
    udp 0 0 ::ffff:10.10.11.109:5062 :::* 22832/java
    udp 0 0 ::ffff:10.0.11.69:5063 :::* 22832/java

    - Has your client been configured correctly?
    - In preferences dialog, make sure:
    - Use a proxy server is checked
    Yes it is checked

    - Proxy server is configured to be your server running OWLCS
    Yes it is set to blinux09.cedarhr.com

    - XDMS host is set to be the hostname of the server running OWLCS
    Yes it is set to blinux09.cedarhr.com

    - XDMS port is the listen port of the managed server (8001 by default)
    Yes it is set to 8894 (wlcs_server1 port)

    Hi Mike,

    Your server is listening on a non-standard SIP port (not 5060). So you need to change the proxy server entry in your client prefs from

    blinux09.cedarhr.com

    to

    blinux09.cedarhr.com:5063

    Let me know if it helps.

    Yes that definitely helped!
    I can register with the server. But the message is now alternating between Ready, Publishing presence and Failed to publish presence.

    ******
    The communications side seems to be working OK. I set up Oracle communicator on another PC, created another account using sash, connected using that and I can send messages between them.

    Hi,
    I changed the sipchannel port for 10.0.11.69 back to 5060 to see if that would help, but it hasn't made a difference it still fails to publish the presence. But I don't have to specify a non-standard port in the proxy preferences any more.

    There is a recurring 'Connection refused' error in the wlcs_server1 server log when the communicator tries to publish the presence:
    ####<Oct 16, 2009 9:49:26 AM BST> <Warning> <WLSS.Transaction> <blinux09.cedarhr.com> <wlcs_server1> <[ACTIVE] ExecuteThread: '15' for queue: 'weblogic.kernel.Default (self-tuning)'> <<anonymous>> <> <> <1255682966722> <BEA-331616> <Failed to send request to cedarhr.com:5060

    And this timeout message:

    Hi Mike,

    It's not able to resolve "cedarhr.com". I think you've missed an important configuration step.

    Please take a look at sections 5.1.1 and 5.1.2 of the OWLCS Installation Guide. Since you are using a realm which is different from the fully qualified hostname of the server, you need to add "cedarhr.com" to the hosts file of your server, pointing to the IP address of the server OWLCS is running on.

    Configure Machine with the new realm:
    – UNIX: /etc/hosts
    – Windows: C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

    Hope this helps.

    Thank you Dev that fixed it, presence is now being published.
    I thought that I did not need to do anything with the hosts file because the FQDN was set up already.
    I will know better next time.

    Once again, thanks for all your help.

    Regards
