    sysman does not exist

    518046
I have an oracle database on HP machine. There is a sysman directory under $ORACLE_HOME/. There is a schema 'dbsnmp' but no schema 'sysman' in the database. The document says the user sysman was created by defalt when the database was created. I don't know why the user 'sysman' is not in the database. Will the user 'sysman' be dropped when you run the command 'emca -repos recreate'? If yes, the command suppose to recreate the user. By I had the following error in the log file:

      oracle.sysman.assistants.util.sqlEngine.SQLFatalErrorException: ORA-01034: ORACLE not available

The following lines are the output on the standard output:

      mspprf44:[promote] /u01/oracle/10g/bin> emca -repos create

First you have to solve your basic problem:
          ORA-01034: ORACLE not available
Obviously you can neither create nor drop a user, when the database is down.

          Then issue the complete command:

          emca -config dbcontrol -repos recreate

Thank you for your reply. My database and listner are up. The $ORACLE_HOME and $ORACLE_SID are set correctly. I can connect to the database as sysdba with sqlplus. I had the following error when I ran 'emca -config dbconsole db -repos recreate'. I have reset the password for user 'dbsnmp'.

mspprf44:[promote] /u01/oracle/10g/bin> emca -config dbcontrol db -repos recreat e

With basic errors like this, I think people need to understand that they need to have a basic Database knowledge before they start installing or think of managing.

                <br>
If they do not, they need to at least look at the documentation to have the required basics.

It is the problem of DB control and can be solved by the work around provided by Note 337260.1 in Oracle Metalink.

does this really constitute a "basic error" ? Well done user515 I think you might have solved one of my problems.

The original message was 'why isn't this working'...and the answer was because your database/listener is down.

The fix in the note described is I agree useful to know, but the symptons of that were NOT in the original post. The problem in the original were due to the database being down.

If that isn't basic knowledge on how to use a oracle database at the DBA level, then what is?

DBMS Direct and Mnazim are the most prolific contributors to this forum and without doubt the most helpful and more patient then I could ever be.

Sorry, I'm ranting, that just annoyed me... ;-)

The database was not down you dummies! The error was the fault of emca.

                          This is not problem.

Just check DB_NAME and instance name uppercase in your database:

                          SQL> show parameters db_name
                          SQL> show parameters instance

You must specify SID in case of database parameter file.

                          Viola.
