Did you create an [ASM instance |http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E11882_01/server.112/e10500/asminst.htm#CHDGDJDF] on each cluster node ?
yes, ASM1 was created on node 1 and ASM2 was created on node 2, and they are both up & running.
Try to set ORACLE_SID to the ASM SID before starting DBCA.
unfortunatley did this not work, tried with TNS_ADMIN set and unset, still same problem...
See My Oracle Support notes:1 person found this helpful
Subject: ERRORS DBCA DISCOVERING AN EXISTENT ASM INSTANCE IN RAC AND NON RAC
Doc ID: 436827.1 Type: TROUBLESHOOTING
Modified Date: 16-MAY-2008 Status: PUBLISHED
Thanks for the note, it got me a bit further. I can see in the log file that it complains over:
"No endpoint found for listener name=LISTENER_kbadb2n1"
Which seems to be a probable cause as I only have these listeners defined & running:
Node 1: LISTENER, LISTENER_SCAN3, LISTENER_SCAN2
Node 2: LISTENER, LISTENER_SCAN1
The LISTENER_kbadb2n1 is defined in the CRS_HOME/network/admin/endpoints_listener.ora but it's not defined in the list of listeners in crs when checking with 'crs_stat -u'.
I tried to create a symlink from O_H/network/admin/listener.ora to CRS_HOME/network/admin/endpoints_listener.ora, as mentioned in the readme as a w/a for bug 8520511, but this still didn't help.
Any further ideas on this?
I am experiencing the exact same issue and have been through the same troubleshooting steps. I was even able to create a single instance 10g database using DBCA as it prompted for the ASM credentials. Has anyone had success creating a 10g RAC database in the 11.2 grid infrastructure?
I should add that I have an SR open with Oracle, however, there has been no progress for two days.
Thanks, this solved my problem.
# if you are running dbca in a RAC env and get the error below, and Oracle NOTE ID 436827.1 does not help, check this.
# Change the ASM entry in /etc/oratab to include the instance thread.
# Like this. Do this on all nodes of a RAC instance.
# ERROR dialog in dbca when selecting an existing ASM instance.
# DBCA could not startup the ASM instance configured on this node.
# To proceed with database create using ASM you need the ASM instance to be up and running.
# Do you want to recreate the ASM instance on this node?
# !!!!!!MAKE SURE YOU CHANGE IT BACK AFTER THE DBCA HAS BEEN RUN!!!!!!
While running dbca from 10.2.0.4 DB HOME on 11GR2 Clusterware( ASM HOME) I was getting this error. Here are the steps to solve the issue.
*1>*To run older databases on 11gR2 ASM and Clusterware you need to create a persistent configuration for the nodes on which these databases are meant to run. This is called pinning a node.
To pin a node in preparation for installing an older Oracle Database version, use <Grid_home>/bin/crsctl with the following command syntax, where nodes is a space-delimited list of one or more nodes in the cluster whose configuration you want to pin:
crsctl pin css -n nodes
To list all pinned nodes:
olsnodes -t -n
*2>* Create a link for 10G_DB_HOME/network/admin/listener.ora to 11G_GRID_HOME/ network/admin/endpoints_listener.ora
ln –s <11G_GRID_HOME>/network/admin/endpoints_listener.ora listener.ora
*3>* export TNS_ADMIN=<10G_DB_HOME>/network/admin
