I'm installing Oracle BI Enterprise Edition 11g on Windows XP service pack 3.
I've successfully used the Repository Creation tool to create the DEV_BIPLATFORM schema.
Then I've run the main Oracle BI install program.
Half way through, the "Database Details" step asks for the Connect String, username and password.
I enter these exactly as they should be, but always get the error:
INST-08029: Unable to connect to the Database with the given credentials.
The details I'm using are:
connect string: ltest2:1521:dwRialto
where ltest2 is a Linux ES5 host running Oracle EE 126.96.36.199. The service name is dwRialto.
Physical connectivity is definitely ok, as proved by the fact that I get error "INST-08035" if I change the service name to something invalid. Also, I get a different error, "INST-08031" if I change the username or password to something invalid. I've also granted SYSDBA and DBA to DEV_BIPLATFORM, but still does not work.
Also, to be sure, I've installed and run SQLDeveloper on the same Windows PC - and that works fine, using the same credentials.
Why is the BI 11g installer not accepting these credentials? I cannot get any further with the install until it does.
we had the same problem an hour ago
What we did was drop the user via the official way in rcu, recreate the user but this time with a different password (so DEV_BIPLATFORM/oracle in our case)
and then we continued without problems :)

I had the same problem and this worked for me too. I am thinking is that the issue is that the installer assumes both schemas use the same password? Did you guys customize the 2 schemas to use different passwords?
I was able to get the issue resolved. Because of the numerous failed installations there was some left over data in a few system tables that I didn't know got created. When I searched for all objects created since the install I saw them and dropped them. After installing a new repository I was able to connect successfully. Thanks for the help!
Yes - first time around, I customised the two schemas to use two different passwords. The second time I chose the same password for both. Maybe the issue? Although before doing the re-install, I thought this might be the issue and I tried changing the DEV_MDS password to match (using ALTER USER ...), but that still didn't work.
I looked at the DB audit trail and I can see that the installer logins with both accounts MDS and BIPLATFORM which is very strongly suggesting that the mickey mouse installer assumes two things:
- The passwords are the same.
- The schema names must share a common prefix.
- The BIPLATFORM must have BIPLATFORM on it's name.
As we get more and more testing on 11g done I keep seeing lots of inconsistencies and lack of testing. In particular this seems to have been tested by people installing things in their local PCs using the defaults rather than doing proper enterprise deployments where users tend to change most defaults to match their liking...
I had the same issue. It turned out the mds and biplatform accounts were locked. May be the password expired bc of the grace period or may be rcu locks all repository accounts after the install. After I unlocked the accounts manually and reset all the passwords it all started working. I found this thread very helpful, thanks!
I made a little bit of testing and the results are here:
1. Both users (DEV_BIPLATFORM and DEV_MDS) MUST be unlocked - my DEV_MDS user was locked after RCU created him
2. Both users MUST have exactly the same password
3. None of the users has to have DBA role nor SYSDBA nor SYSOPER priviledges as it is written in the dialog HELP - they simply don't need it
Again, we can see how stupid mistakes hold you off for a long time
I have tried all the above options of dropping the schema and then creating a new schema, trying same passwords for all schemas but then too mine error is still the same INST-08029 Unable to connect to Database with given credentials.
The details that i am providing are as follows-
database type- oracle database
BIPLATFORM SCHEMA USERNAME- DEV_BIPLATFORM
BIPLATFORM SCHEMA PASSWORD- schema
I used schema as the new password while recreating the schema in RCU. Everything is done on my local laptop, so i am using local host.
Please please help me out. I have almost spent 3 days and still not been able to install oracle business intelligence software on my machine.
