Have a look at the method addConnectionNotificationListener in the JMXConnector class. You can register a listener and get notified from the connector when the connection is closed. In a small example I was able to catch the event of server disconnection
The same applies with the web services connector, register your notification listener and test to see if the connector notifies you (I haven't done that so I am not sure if it works)
