I just re-downloaded the jdk-6u5-windows-i586-p.exe file and ran it on someone else?s computer and they also do not have a javac.exe file.

Is there an executable in addition to jdk-6u5-windows-i586-p.exe that I need to download and run to create the javac.exe file?

crazyy... Both have the same executables, yet one folder is for the jdk and the other for the jre.

Are you sure that u downloaded the jdk, and downloaded the jdk on the other persons computer and not the runtime??

also, how big was the download (in MB)?

The file I downloaded says jdk "jdk-6u5-windows-i586-p.exe" and I downloaded it from the JDK links:

"JDK 6 Update 5" link from this page:
    http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/?intcmp=1281

    Then

"Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language " link from this page:
    https://sdlc5b.sun.com/ECom/EComActionServlet;jsessionid=9EE09D09A62F48B9F3F97673BC9D05AD

The jdk-6u5-windows-i586-p.exe file is 71.39 MB

Ah well if you're deliberately selecting install options to not run
this or that from your hard drive...

To add anything more would be a waste of time.

The only option I changed was the directory the program installs to.

Is there a windows xp option I need to change before install?

I figured it out. I just re-downloaded it again and left the directories at default.

The installer first ask me to install the
    JAVA SE Development kit 6
    update 5
    private jre 6 update 5

I was changing the directory to C:\jdk1.6.0_05

Then the installer ask me to install the
    Java SE Runtime Environment

I was also placing this in C:\jdk1.6.0_05 because I figured I would keep all the java files together. Unfortunately, this was overwriting the JDK bin file.

Since C:\jdk1.6.0_05 has a jre subdirectory it did not occur to me that the jre install was overwriting the C:\dk1.6.0_05/bin directory.

Thank you everyone for your help.

I just downloaded and installed the same version of the SDK, and there is no javac.exe .

Oh. I did the same thing - gave the same directories for the SDK and the JRE.

You should specify not to install the JRE, because you're going to get the same complete JRE under jdk1.6.0_05/jre anyway. Asking to install the JRE gives you 2 copies of the same JRE, at about 180M each.
