..We have a User running IE7 ..
..who had installed Java6. He even wasn't able to load the "Do I have Java installed" applet from the java.com website. The Java progress image ran eternally. We tried to reinstall the lastest version Java6u18 several times but with no success. In Firefox it worked. My first guess would be 'IE7'.
Then we uninstalled Java6 und installed java5u22. This works with IE.
Can you image what is the problem?
We've had a lot of trouble with the latest JREs due to the "next generation" changes. Whilst it's easy to blame IE for this, we've also noted it also occurs with Safari.
You could try disabling the next-gen plugin. We found that works every time, but of course it's a pain telling our clients to do that.
Try enabling java console to be shown each time and tracing in the java control panel.
Please post output from the console.
Next generation plugin runs in the separate process - do you have any firewall that can be blocking outgoing connections for java process?
