Working on a framework on top of Swing to do graphical editors for games. Right now It supports drawing images anywhere you want. Internally the images are stored in a quad tree for very efficient lookups based on a range of coordinates and the insertion/removal is also adequate. You can either select/deselect images by left clicking them, or you can select them by drawing a rectangle around them (like in windows for files). When images are selected I draw a 25% transparent blue rectangle on top of them. You can resize the selection square by dragging the edges. Also, there is an optional grid with configurable cell size with snap to grid property. The framework allows images to be in the same space, but it is up to the application itself to allow it or not.
Still todo: dragging selected images around, undo/redo, edge detection, etc.
