problem in launching sunMC 4.0 Web console

    800451
Does anybody have problem in launching sunMC 4.0 web console from a browser?

I have installed sunMC 4.0 on a Solaris 10 upgrade server.

When I type the URL of the sunMC 4.0 server with the default port 8080 I gets the welcome page giving me two options:

      - Launch Web Console
      href='https://172.17.210.96:6789/'>Launch Web Console

      - Launch Java Console

None of the options works for me.

Clicking on "Launch Web Console" ends with error page saying "Unable to Connect". Get the same error regardless of browser: Firefox or IE.

Clicking on "Launch Java Console" gives me "Unable to launch Sun Management Center"
When clicking on "Details" button I gets
An error occurred while launching/running the application.

      Title: Sun Management Center
      Vendor: Sun Microsystems, Inc.
      Category: Download Error

      Unable to load resource: http://172.17.35.18:8080/smconsole.jnlp
A find on the server reveals that smconsole.jnlp is installed on /opt/SUNWsymon/web/console/smconsole.jnlp

I have no problem in launching the console using via script /opt/SUNWsymon/sbin/es-start -c

          Hi Shen,
          - Launch Web Console
          href='https://172.17.210.96:6789/'>Launch Web Console
          <snip>
          Unable to load resource: http://172.17.35.18:8080/smconsole.jnlp
Does your SunMC Server have more than one network interface? (there are 2 different IPs in your error messages: which one is your Server?)

If the port 6789 link is broken it's possible that web server isn't running: try a "/usr/sbin/smcwebserver restart"

If you you installed a new interface after the SunMC Server software you may need to use the /opt/SUNWsymon/esmultiip command to add the new IP (use it with the "-l" flag to list the IPs your Server is using now).

i, are you trying to connect to sun mc web, from windows?, ...... i only can connect from solaris, because the tool redirections to a local direction (loopback), such as 127.0.0.1, inside the os.

You can use hummingbird to get the X11, to connect from a windows machine

              The server is dual home.
Both IPs are added to sunMC
              # /opt/SUNWsymon/sbin/esmultiip -l
Multi IP configured with active interfaces "172.17.35.18 172.17.210.96"

              #
I didn't have this problem with sunMC 3.6. that was installed on this exact same server.
I uninstalled sunMC 3.6 and installed sunMC 4.0.

                Hi Peter,

I was trying using firefox on a windows workstation.
And you are right. Running netstat shows that localhost is listening to port 6789
                # netstat -an | grep 678
                127.0.0.1.6788             *.*                0      0 49152      0 LISTEN
                127.0.0.1.6789             *.*                0      0 49152      0 LISTEN
                #
So, I used Cygwin/X from a windows workstation and got the Web console by using mozilla browser with URL https://localhost:6789. But, when using URL with the hostname and port 8080, I got the usual Welcome to Sun Management Center. When I clicked on the link "Launch Web Console", this time I got an alert:
The connection was refused when attempting to contact 172.17.35.18:6789
However, one must wonder why this redirection to localhost IP?.
Shouldn't the the host IP be listening to the port 6789?
Is it a bug in sunMC 4.0? I didn't have this type of problem with sunMC 3.6

                  Hi Shen,

                  Try the following:

                       # svccfg -s svc:/system/webconsole setprop options/tcp_listen = true
                       # svcadm disable svc:/system/webconsole
                       # svcadm enable svc:/system/webconsole

                  Regards,

                  Patrick

                    IT WORKED!

External access to Java Web Console was restored.
Ports 6788 and 6789 are no longer restricted to localhost.
I can browse sunMC 4.0 Web console from any workstation and/or host now.
                    # svccfg
                    svc:> select system/webconsole
                    svc:/system/webconsole> listprop

                    #
Is external access to Java Web Console disabled by default?
Is this procedure documented in any of sunMC manuals?
If not then it should. At minimum, on the release notes.

                    THANK YOU!

I don't believe it's in any of the official documents. I've posted it in our knowledge base: http://forums.halcyoninc.com/showthread.php?p=92#post92

Hopefully the next person running into this problem will be able to find the solution.
