    Registration Connection Error (sconadm)

    807567
I have so far been unable to get my 10 11/06 Sparc box to register with Sun. I am running the following command:

      sconadm -a -r RegistrationProfile

and I am getting the following error message:

      sconadm is running
      Authenticating user ...
cacao[3711]: com.sun.scn.jmx.impl.AbstractComponent.log : com.sun.scn.service.clientreg.CRSClientException: java.rmi.RemoteException: HTTP transport error: javax.net.ssl.SSLException: Unrecognized SSL message, plaintext connection?; nested exception is:
HTTP transport error: javax.net.ssl.SSLException: Unrecognized SSL message, plaintext connection?
      failed registration!

I'm not using a proxy server, but I am behind a firewall blocking all incoming access to this server. Is that a problem?

Also, this is a fresh install but I did disable a bunch of services. Reenabling those services didn't seem to help, though I may have missed one that I originally disabled (and that may be the crux of this problem).

      Anyway advice would be appreciated.

      Chris

p.s. I found some other people having problems and it was suggested they upgrade to v1.5.0_12 of Java. I tried this and it did not help.

Does your firewall block any outgoing traffic, such as HTTPS on port 443? The error suggests that the server is communicating to a regular HTTP server rather than HTTPS.

Could we have the output from the following commands:

          # showrev -p | cut -d" " -f2 | sort > /tmp/showrev-p
          # egrep '11978[8|9]|12033[5|6]|12108[1|2]' /tmp/showrev-p
          # egrep '12111[8|9]|12145[3|4]|12156[3|4]' /tmp/showrev-p
          # egrep '12223[1|2]|12300[3|4|5|6]|12446[3|6]' /tmp/showrev-p
          # egrep '1241[71|87]|12461[4|5]' /tmp/showrev-p

          # cacaoadm list-params
          # java -version

It would also be useful if you could provide the contents of your registration file (username, password and subscription key obfuscated of course).

Okay, I'm fairly new to Unix and this is just a test system so I reinstalled the OS last night to make sure that I didn't cause the problem that I'm experiencing. After the install, it still failed with more or less the same error message--so I'm semi-happy to report that this wasn't my doing.

Anyway, that said one minor thing has changed since my previous mail as a result. My java patch has reverted to the distributed version. That is all, on with the output:

            bash-3.00# showrev -p | cut -d" " -f2 | sort > /tmp/showrev-p
            bash-3.00# egrep '11978[8|9]|12033[5|6]|12108[1|2]' /tmp/showrev-p

            121118-09
            121453-02
            bash-3.00# egrep '12223[1|2]|12300[3|4|5|6]|12446[3|6]' /tmp/showrev-p

I have no reason to believe our firewall blocks port 443 outgoing. I don't know exactly how to test it, but I did this portscan and it looks like, from my computer (which is behind the same firewall and ruleset as the server) I can connect to getupdates1.sun.com:

            Port Scan has started ...

            Port Scanning host: 198.232.168.136

                 Open TCP Port:      443
            Port Scan has completed ...

              Please apply the following patches:

              121118-12
              123003-03
              124171-06

I would also suggest upgrading to Java 1.5.0 update 12 which can be obtained from:
              http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index_jdk5.jsp

Then ensure that the system is using the new version:

              # cacaoadm stop
              # cacaoadm set-param java-home=/usr/jdk/jdk1.5.0_12
              # cacaoadm start
              # java -version

The system is downrev on patch 121081-08, also check that patches 123630-03 and 137137-09 are applied. Is there a proxy or firewall blocking connections? If you require more immediate assistance, please open a support case.
