    Can't register new S10 11-06 system

    807567
      I have a newly installed S10 11/06 system (previous S10 06/06 system that wasn't upgradable) and I cannot get the system registered. Using either /usr/sbin/sconadm register -a -r /root/registrationprofile.properties or /usr/bin/updatemanager, I get errors:

      /usr/sbin/sconadm register -a -r /root/registrationprofile.properties gives me:

      sconadm is running
      Authenticating user ...

          Please post the output of the following commands as we will need this information before we can advise further:

          $ cat /etc/release
          $ cat /var/sadm/system/admin/CLUSTER
          $ java -version
          $ smpatch get
          $ showrev -p |egrep '123005|121453|121118|120335|121081|121563|122231|119788|124463' | cut -f2 -d " "

          We will also need to see your registrationprofile.properties file so post that as well, with your password and subscription key (if used) replaced by asterisks.

              Java will need to be upgraded to 1.5.0_09 or later. Since your system connects to the internet via an HTTP proxy, it could run into java bug #6226610. Upgrading java will rule out this bug from being the problem.

              After upgrading, follow these steps before trying to register again:

              # cacaoadm stop
              # cacaoadm status
              # /usr/lib/cc-ccr/bin/eraseCCRRepository
              # rm /var/scn/persistence/SCN*

              Check the value of the java.home variable in the cacao properties file:

              $ grep java.home /etc/cacao/instances/default/private/cacao.properties

              Change it to reflect the location of the newly installed version, then start
              cacao:

              # cacaoadm start
              # cacaoadm status
              # netstat -an | grep 1116

              Try registering again using sconadm:

              # /usr/sbin/sconadm register -a -r <regfile>

              If it still fails then we'll need to ask you to wait while some other similar cases we have are resolved. They are currently being investigated by the engineering team and once we have a resolution we will post it to this forum.

                No dice. Followed all instructions and still:

                # /usr/sbin/sconadm register -a -r /root/registrationprofile.properties
                sconadm is running
                Authenticating user ...

                  OK. The java dump is exactly the same as in some other support cases we have currently under investigation. We will post an update here when we learn anything new from those cases.

                      The Engineering team believe the NullPointerException is being caused by bug 6509847. They have created an IDR patch (IDR125050-01.zip) which should fix this issue, or at least bypass the problem which is causing the exception.

                      To confirm whether you should apply this IDR, check your cacao.0 file and look for the following message:

                      "Caused by: java.lang.NullPointerException at com.sun.scn.sam.SolarisAssetDataCollector.getCpuModels(SolarisAssetDataCollecto r.java:2124)"

                      # grep 2124 /var/cacao/instances/default/logs/cacao.0

                      If the message is found then you should apply the IDR as it confirms you are affected by Bug 6509847.

                      The IDR patch is attached.

                        Do not install the above IDR!

                        An IDR, being custom software, is not qualified for general use. It is intended solely for use by the customer(s) for which it is generated.

                        For more about IDRs please read:

                          As suggested there were entries as described in cacao.0

                          I set locale =en_US.ISO8859-1 as suggested in another thread descibing user registration probs ...... seems like a lot of people are having registration diffs.

                          Could there be an easier process I wonder ..... , thanks for the prompt response.

                          There seemed to be a prob with the IDR patch as seen below. This was after a couple of attempts ... I even uninstalled the SUNWsam from system install and tried to install the included SUNWsam and then tried .. no luck. I reinstalled the systempkg and reran with the results below ??

                            Installed the IDR and it solved the issue for me. I was finally able to register the system.

                            Whee! :)

                                Only T(emporary) patches and security related IDR patches are available from the URL you have tried.

                                Normal IDRs are not actually available publically for download from anywhere. We posted it on the forum earlier but had to remove it.

                                Do you have a support contract? If so please submit a service request via your local solution center, or the OSC, and if the support team determine that you are affected by the bug mentioned then they should be able to provide you with the IDR.

                                  So, if I paid $240 for a software support contract (I started this thread), but don't have software support (other that Solaris Service contract), I cannot use my purchase contract for Solaris Patches? </me scratches head what $240 buys me>

                                    Once you have raised a support case our engineers and backline teams will be available to work your case in order to provide a solution.
