Different automatic proxy configuration PAC URLs produce different results

I'm trying to track down the cause of JScript syntax errors that result whenever the Java Plug-In starts up, either by an applet or Java Web Start (JWS) application.

We currently use JRE 6.0 update 18 with IE7 on Vista.

I uploaded a copy of the PAC file to a different server so I could work on it and to my surprise the JScript syntax errors vanished once I configured the Java Plug-In to use the copy's URL.

I double-checked that the files at each URL are identical (wget then diff).

The HTTP response headers are different:

      I'm baffled - any ideas?
