In more detail, the main issue/question is whether there can be 2 Oracle CRS homes on the same server i.e. separate 10gR2 and 11gR2 CRS homes residing on the same server for the purposes of (gradually) upgrading all Oracle RDBMS homes from 10g RAC to 11g RAC.
Can there be? What would be the implications for the OCR and voting disk? In our case 10g CRS has OCR and Voting Disk on raw devices. In 11gR2, these would need to be migrated/upgraded/stored in ASM, right?
We have 6 10g rdbms homes in addition to the one 10g CRS home and one 10g ASM home. To upgrade can we
- Install 11gR2 CRS in a separate home (this would now include ASM as well)
- Install 11gR2 RDBMS home
- Upgrade one of the 6 10g databases while leaving the others untouched as 10g databases in the separate 10g CRS, 10g ASM stack?
Any ideas, pointers greatly appreciated.
In 11gR2, ASM is part of the Grid Infrastructure installation.
You can have only one GI (ClusterWare and ASM) install in a cluster -- whether it is multi-node or single-node.

Thanks for the responses.
I have a further question.
If we are upgrading single-instance Oracle databases from 10gr2 to 11gr2 can we have multiple ASM homes on the same server? So, in this case we are NOT installing RAC or CRS. Just ASM and RDBMS for two difference departments on the same server
so we want to install somthing like this
Is this feasible or are there any issues with having multiple ASM homes in 11gR2?
Thanks for your time,
since in 11.2 ASM is bundles with the grid infrastructure and you only have one grid infrastructure, you only have 1 ASM home (not multiple).
It is true that due to the nature of an out of place upgrade, you will have more "Homes" where an ASM instance could run from, but there can only be one running ASM instance on a server.
So it is either 11.2 GI with an older 10.2 ASM instance or 11.2GI with a new 11.2 ASM instance.
What is always possible is to have multiple database homes, as you described above.
I have a similar setup and need some help. We have a server with the following:
Single node RAC (no plans to add further nodes)
11gR2 Cluster ware
On this server, is it possible to install a standalone 11gR2 database and still use of the existing ASM instance for storage by adding additional DGs.
You have single node RAC & no further plans to add nodes, your database will work as stand alone database.
You can host RAC database or stand alone database instances on machine running on Oracle cluster.
You can use the existing ASM to host the database. Also you can create datafiles on host file system
For adding additional DG to ASM, DG will be part of ASM & any database can use the new DG. It will be the responsibility of DBA who adds new datafiles to ensure the DG at the time of datafile creation
Hope this helps
