    Memory_target in 11g

    787588
      Hi,

When i try to increase Memory_target, I found there is not enough space in OS level.

I followed this note. *ORA-00845 When Starting Up An 11g Instance With AMM Configured. [ID 460506.1]*

after increasing ASM is also went down. What is the reason?

and also mentioned to permanent changes we need to edit /etc/fstab but the given format in document and the format in fstab file is quiet different, can anyone suggest me.

          What is the reason?
what clues exist within alert_SID.log file?

are you talking about SID of database or ASM?

            from database.

Adjusting the default value of parameter parallel_max_servers
from 160 to 135 due to the value of parameter processes (150)
            Starting ORACLE instance (normal)
WARNING: You are trying to use the MEMORY_TARGET feature. This feature requires the /dev/shm file system to be mounted for at least 4194304000 bytes. /dev/shm is either not mounted or is mounted with available space less than this size. Please fix this so that MEMORY_TARGET can work as expected. Current available is 3701264384 and used is 2594578432 bytes. Ensure that the mount point is /dev/shm for this directory.
            memory_target needs larger /dev/shm

But here my question is why ASM went down?

It is nothing to do with the root (/) system space, but the MEMORY_TARGET feature does requires the /dev/shm file system to be mounted for at Least <size> bytes.

It seems /dev/shm file system is not mounted in your case,

Please copy and paste the result of
              $mount
              $ df -k
              $cat /etc/fstab

which OS version are you running?

                Yes,

/dev/shm is less space, so i need to increase that. Hope you got it.

Later i logged in root, and increased size using command "mount" & i checked now the size increased.

after logged into oracle user, when i checked asm instance also down. What are the possible reasons.

What does the alert.log of the ASM instance say?

The changes you have made should not have caused any issue to ASM, but best place would looking at the asm logs and see error messages.

Check the /u01/app/oracle/diag/asm/+asm/+ASM/trace/+ASM_gmon_6477.trc file for more details.

If you are not sure, you should re-boot the system and see if it works

If i increase /dev/shm why ASM went down?

                                Clean all log files.
                                Shutdown the database
                                Increase the /dev/shm filesystem
                                Increate the max_target.
Start DB, observe log files and see what happens.

                                It should be fine.

Look at oerr for all those error messages. You messed with /dev/shm, ASM didn't like that. It's like walking through the elevator doors when they open and the elevator isn't there. Death after enough time to scream.
