The database is installed in unix server. I am using my local machine and
oracle client is installed on my machine.
my system is windows xp. Oracle server is unix. Oracle version is 10g
I can connect to the schema using Toad without any problem. But sqlplus is giving
this strange issues which i never had in the past

Could you see which tnsnames.ora the TOAD is using?
from a command prompt, try tnsping the alias you are trying to connect.

I can do tnsping and its brings back the DBname and all other credentials.
I can call sqlplus from the command prompt (cmd) and it connects.
but not with sqlplusw.
note, i copied the tnsnames which is used in toad(toad also use the same location network\admin\tnsnames.ora) but still issues..

Very strange. If I were you, I would take backup of tnsnames.ora and try to re install the Oracle client. But that is me.
Please check the sqlnet.ora file. Change the following entry and try, this will work.
Original Entry - SQLNET.AUTHENTICATION_SERVICES= (NTS)
Modified Entry - SQLNET.AUTHENTICATION_SERVICES= (NONE)
restart DB and test.
