    unexpected error:  SIGSEGV (0xb) /  VM_Operation: RevokeBias

    874185
      Hi,
this is my very first post in this forum. I am a newbie to java (to tell the truth: I dont know nothing about java) but have to take care about this problem :-(
What happend: we get sporadically the following crash and we have absolutely no clue why. We are running a software from an external company and their developers think the crash is caused in javas garbage collection.
We run Tomcat 5.5.25 + JVM 1.6.0_04-b12 on a Sun Solaris Server
Maybe somebody can help us? Thanks very much :-)

and their developers think the crash is caused in javas garbage collection.
That ranges from unlikely to really, really unlikely.

There is a case where that occurs but it requires that the VM is the 64 bit version and that some specific VM options are in use.
Certainly doesn't look like you are using the 64 bit VM.

The 32 bit VM is very stable.

The MOST likely cause of a sigsegv is JNI code and it seems likely that such code is in use. Probably in that third party library.

Regardless if the 3rd party library uses JNI then it a very likely source of the problem in all cases. The only way the 3rd party component is excluded as the cause is if they themselves do not use JNI is any way including with their own use of other 3rd party components that use JNI.

Except in this case, I don't see any third-party shared objects listed in the JVM crash output. So it's possible they're not using JNI at all, meaning this could very well be a JVM bug.

If they are using JNI, they're unloading the library at some time, and FWIW I'm just speculating that it's even possible to do that - it may not be. Since this appears to be Solaris, run a "pldd PID" against a running JVM and see if there are any third-party shared objects loaded. If there are third-party shared objects loaded, check the signal handlers. Since the third-party shared objects don't show up in the crash output, maybe they installed a signal handler to remove the library upon a SIGSEGV, for example. That'd be sleazy. It's not likely that they've done that, but I have seen similar behavior in the past, and it's evidence they know of the bug(s), can't fix them, and are lying through their teeth. (In my case, the vendor had attempted to disable core files with a call to setrlimit(), then claimed their app could never generate a core file because it didn't have any bugs. I'll leave it as an exercise for the reader to figure out one of the many ways to get around that lame attempt...)

But the the most likely course is probably to upgrade the JVM as the odds of the 3rd party vendor doing that are really slim (but it is something to check for...). And I'll bet there have been a lot of bug fixes since 1.6.0_04.

Generic interest question. Does this line indicate that it was indeed a crash in the JVM, or will this also be reported when a JNI linked shared library goes to limbo (because it is invoked somewhere from within the inner workings of the JVM)?

Might there be a problem because of the java server process running on JDK 1.5 and the application using JRE 1.6.0_04 ???
