Creating Domain step fails while trying to install OBIEE 11g (11.1.1.5)

Hi Everyone,

I am really stuck at a point from where I do not know which route to take. I am trying to install OBIEE 11g (11.1.1.5) on my Windows 7 (32-bit) laptop. I have tried all the options:
1. Simple Install
2. Enterprise Install
3. Software only install (after installing Weblogic 10.3.4.0 separately)

Everything goes well till the step Bi Configuration->Creating Domain.

In this process whenever it reaches the stage when it tries to start Node Manager, it starts getting java exceptions and fails. It typically occurs when it does not find the nodemanager.properties file and tries to save the configurations there. It then encounters a Fatal Error.

After this it hangs for a long time before finally coming up with Node Manager Server Timed Out error and finally the Creating Domain step fails.

One thing that I have noticed is that whenever it tries to create the nodemanager.properties or write to it it encounters this error and hence the nodemanager.properties file is also not getting generated.

I have ensured that there are no spaces in the TEMP and TMP paths. I even tried creating and putting the nodemanager.properties file in the location but that too does not work.

Strange part is that when I install Weblogic separately and have nodemanager as a windows service, then with the nodemanager.properties that I created the windows service runs, but the OBIEE installation still fails.

Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks and regards,
Subho

It seems that a lot of people have similar problem, but not exactly the same. Lets hope the experts out her find something that will help us. In my opinion it is either a problem with weblogic not being able to write to the nodemanager.properties file or something with the OS settings.

BTW I have BitLocker running on my machine (company policy). Can that have an effect on installation?

Please also note that when I installed Weblogic first (for software only install), even then the nodemanager.properties file was not created in <%WL_HOME%>\common\nodemanager

Is there something I am missing? or a System setting of some sort? Until this file is created, I feel OBIEE installation will continue to fail as it will not be able to write to this file.

    Anyone?

    Thanks and regards,
    Subho

Are you sure you're using the correct version of Weblogic ?
OBI 11.1.1.5 runs without any problems against Weblogic 10.3.5

Check the certification matrix. 10.3.5 is a prerequisite.

    Hi Rene,

Unfortunately, when I tried to install using the software only option it gave the pre-requisite that Weblogic Version should be 10.3.4.0. I had originally installed 10.3.5.0

However, it seems that there might be a problem with the laptop in question as I had previously installed OBIEE 10.1.3.4.1 on it and it might have left some residues. When I tried to install it on another person's machine it went off without a hitch (simple installation). Even OBIA 7.9.6.3 got installed properly.

So as I next step I re-imaged my laptop and am doing a fresh install.

The error seems to occur because during the installation process when it tries to start the node manager, it fails to find the nodemanager.properties file and is also not able to create it with the default settings. I believe it is some permissions issue on Windows 7.

Thanks nevertheless... please feel free to provide your insights if you feel I am doing something wrong here.

    Thanks and regards,
    Subho

My problem is "creating domain is failed". I guess that the issue with windows 7 32 bits on laptop doesn't configure and run nodemanager. I tried to start nodemanager but don't work (with weblogic scriptinf tools WST). However, Weblogic run ok but nodemanager is inactive. Also it doesn't create nodemanager.propierties. If I create a file nodemanager.properties (or I copied on directory obiee_home\ws_server_10.3\common\nodemanager) obiee installer configures its parameters pre-configured (if I modify a parameter, the installer modify it a default value and I don't know where is these parameters and its definition).

I have installed obiee simple and enterprise and it don't work. I have installed on oracle 11g R2 (desktop and enterprise with datawarehouse) and obiee installer doesn't work. Further this installation obiee delay an hour and then generates error in my case "creating domain is failed".

I'm going try to run install obiee 11.1.1.5 on windows 7 xp mode.

Important: We need help of oracle experts or Oracle communicates if obiee installs or not on windows 7 32 bits laptop because We have wasted

    Thanks if anyone help us!!

    Hi Henry,

I was facing the same issue and it was because of that that I started this thread. However, as you can see, it has not received many replies. I did not find the exact cause behind why the nodemanager fails nor why it is not able to create nodemanager.properties.

However I did find a way to get OBIEE 11.1.1.5 to run on WIndows 7 32bits. I re-imaged/reformatted my laptop so that there are no more residues of previous installations of previous versions and even the OS permissions and everything are back to what it should be on a fresh/new machine.

Once this was done OBIEE 11g installed without a hitch for both Simple and Enterprise Installations (I tried it on two different machines). I have not yet tried the software only install after this but have no reason to believe why it should not work.

I also installed OBIA 7.9.6.3 on top of the OBIEE and even that is working fine. There are steps however which you need to follow for installing OBIA 7.9.6.3 and ways to point to the OOB Catalog and rpd that comes with it, but that would not be relevant to this thread.

    Thanks and regards,
    Subho

    Hi, Subho

I installed obiee 11g on Windows 7 XPmode and it works but it is very slowly. I'll think (I have others programs installed and this task could be delayed) about your option on "new machine". But I have wasted many hours trying to install obiee on Windows 7 Ultimate and more hours .. ok.

    Thanks,

    Henry

    Hi Henry,

I guess the reason your machine has become very slow when you have installed OBIEE 11g on XP compatibility mode, is because you might not have increased the virtual memory size of your machine. You can do a quick search on google and see how it is done.

Relax it is not buying stuff or dealing with hardware! :) its just changing some settings which I do not remember at the top of my head. Its pretty simple I can assure you that. Try it out and see if it helps with the response time of your system.

    Subho

    Hi Subho,
I hand the very same problem, but in my case I’m installing Fusion 11g on a Windows X64 machine.
The error I was getting was:

    java.lang.NullPointerException
    at java.util.Hashtable.containsKey(Hashtable.java:307)
    at weblogic.nodemanager.server.NMServerConfig.initNetworkInfoList(NMServerConfig.java:495)

(Notice the difference in line number – 495 as opposed to 491 in your case)

Anyway, in my case I done the following to fix the error.

Got a copy of a working nodemanage.properties and placed it in “C:\oracle\Middleware\wlserver_10.3\common\nodemanager”
Then, in that ‘nodemanager.properties’ I had to set the property ‘LogToStderr=false’ to make the node manager start correctly. (Having it set to 'true' caused the error above.)
I can’t tell you why this should be the case, but it worked for me.

    Regards,
    dmac.

    A bug is involved:

    Product: WLS10.3.5
Bug 12564602: OBIEE 11.1.1.5 INSTALL FAILS ON CREATE DOMAIN MISSING NODEMANAGER.PROPERTIES

    Download the patch from MOS.
