Upgrade 11.2.0.1 to 11.2.0.3

11gR2 on RHEL 5, Single Instance with ASM

I have trying to find one document that has all the upgrade details but it just seems like there are so many different notes in MOS. So may notes point to bug fix patches that need to be applied before the upgrade can be done.

1. Has anyone gone through this process already and has notes on it?

2. Do I need to upgrade the grid infrastructure home first then the database?

Thanks

Ok, I will re-phrase my question as I know what it sounds like. "RTFM!"

In the Oracle Database Upgrade manual, it seems like they say to Upgrade the database first and then the grid infrastructure (ASM). Is this correct?

    No that is not correct,

Here is the scratch steps you can follow
    - install new 11.2.0.3 and perform ASM upgrade
    - install new 11.2.0.3 home for database
    - upgrade the database

    furthermore have a read http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E11882_01/install.112/e22489/procstop.htm#BABEHGJG

I also see the following in

    http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E11882_01/install.112/e10812/procstop.htm#BABEHGJG

•To upgrade existing 11.2.0.1 Oracle Grid Infrastructure installations to Oracle Grid Infrastructure to any later version (11.2.0.2 or 11.2.0.3), you must patch the release 11.2.0.1 Oracle Grid Infrastructure home (11.2.0.1.0) with the 9706490 patch.

So I guess I should apply the patch too?

    Hello,

Just a follow up questions as I am facing the same issue of upgrading to 11203 from 11201.

    - install new 11.2.0.3 and perform ASM upgrade

Is this in a new home or in the existing 11201 home ?*

    - install new 11.2.0.3 home for database
Is this in a new home or in the existing 11201 home ?*

    - upgrade the database

Also what binaries do I use to upgrade the Grid Infrastructure and the database ?

    Thanks,
    C.

I am a Little confused. I too am about to upgrade 11.2.01 to 11.2.0.3.1, but on a Windows X64 platform. The instructions state in the Pre-Installation section:

1.Ensure that your Oracle Database installation is the same release for which you are applying this patch. In other words, only apply the Release 11.2.0.3 Bundle patch to an Oracle Database Release 11.2.0.3.
2.This patch must be applied on top of the 11.2.0.3 base release or on top of any earlier bundle patches released prior to 11.2.0.3 Patch 1 without performing a rollback of earlier bundle patch.

I cannot find an 11.2.03 Base release for Windows. Am I missing something (apart from a few brain cells by the looks of things !). I have read that the patch releases now constitute FULL releases, but as this patch set for Windows X64 comes in at 137Mb, it would appear to be a little on the small side.

11.2.0.3.1 can only be installed on top of 11.2.0.3.

Patch numbers for the Windows platform are available in MOS Doc 161549.1 (Oracle Database, Networking and Grid Agent Patches for Microsoft Platforms)

Can Patch 13348650 be applied on NON-RAC databases ?

I want to patch just 1 database instance called NZPOLREP. All of the databases listed below are single instance (NON-RAC) databases and all of them stores data on the +ASM storage.

    -bash-3.2$ cat /etc/oratab
    +ASM:/opt/oracle/oracle/product/11gR2_grid:N
    NZPOLREP:/opt/oracle/oracle/product/11gR2_db:N

    -bash-3.2$ uname -a
    Linux <edited> 2.6.18-238.5.1.el5 #1 SMP Mon Feb 21 05:52:39 EST 2011 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

As you can see the +ASM has a different home from NZPOLREP. We are encountering Bug 10237773 on NZPOLREP only and according to metalink this is fixed in 11.2.0.3.

    1. Can I just patch the NZPOLREP database home only and not patch the ASM GI home ? will it fix bug 10237773 ?
    2. Do I need to apply PATCH 9413827 to 11.2.0.1 before doing an out-of-place patch to 11.2.0.3 ?
    3. Which patch should I apply to my NON-RAC x86-64 bit ? Most of the documentation that I read are for RAC configurations.

Again : Can patch 13348650 be applied to a non RAC database ?

It is considered to be rude to hijack someone else's thread - always post your question in a new thread.

For stand alone databases, pl use patch 13343438 - see MOS Doc 756671.1 (Oracle Recommended Patches -- Oracle Database)

This may be a dumb questions, but do these general upgrade steps apply to a standalone 11.2.0.1 database using ASM (grid 11.2.0.1) installed?

In other words, can someone clarify that "Single instance" is the same as "standalone"

    Thanks!
