Item Grouping Inventory Status

Is there an easy way to create a search or report that allows us to see the on hand and back ordered quanities for item groupings?  We would like to be able to see if an item grouping could be created based on the inventory on hand but have yet to find an easy way for the item groupings to show up along with an exploded view of all the line items and their inventory status.
