Sales by Item as a Search

We are trying to build a complex report for re-order use. The problem with using the Sales by Item Summary customized is that we cannot get some key data / filtering to work on there. So, we are combining List Views of Items with the standard Sales by Item Summary and exporting them to Excel. . . not really where we want to be with Netsuite.

What would be the proper criteria to build a search that would replicate the Sales by Item Summary? What constitutes a sale? It is not only Cash Sales and Invoices, as it includes Credits etc.

So, in other words, what is going on behind the scenes of a Sales by Items Summary?
