SalesOrder Creation with an Item Group

I am trying to create a sales order using the API and not getting any result for the Item Group id or name.

I also tried using it in the sample C# .Net application in the AddSalesOrder, but that gives me "[Error]: [Code=INVALID_KEY_OR_REF] Invalid item reference key #####"

Can ItemGroups not be used through the API? If not, do you have to query the group and add all the items in the group individually to the sales order?
