How to Read Items from Shopping Bag?

I have a shipping script that needs to evaluate items in the customer's shopping bag.  If an item is in the bag, a notice must be fired and the item removed.  My review of the API thus far doesn't show indications of how to interact with shopping bag items.  Can anyone point me toward code samples and/or documentation?
