Unable to display department info on a report

I am trying to set up a Transaction Detail report in order to analyze cash disbursements/expenses. Part of this analysis is to make sure line items within a transaction are coded to the correct department (ie Sales, Finance, Engineering, etc). For some reason, the "department" fields when selected in the Report Builder screen do not return any info.  Anyone know how to get departments to display on a transaction report?
