How do I detect item sub type?

I want to detect what type of item I am working with. nlapiGetRecordType will tell me the base item type (ie inventoryitem, noninventoryitem, etc) but I need to know when I am dealing with a Kit/Package or an Assembly/Bill of Materials.

Does anyone know how this can be done.
