Records duplicated in search results

I have a RESTlet that does a search of a custom record.  These are child records of transactions, and if add a column from a joined-on transaction, I get every record returned twice.  Any idea why this might be?  It's got me in a bind so I'm going to cook it down to a minimal case and post it..  But if you know why please let me know and save me a few minutes.
