Descriptive URLS

ok got a test and live version of netsuite here and ideally i would like to switch on descriptive urls as the existing ones are as per netsuite. I have searched on here and noticed that it is not possible to do this on my test account as there is not a url pointing to it.

Sooo what i need to know is how reliable it is in terms of redirects when switch on a live site and if i switched are google ranks affected in any way?
