Getting Alerts on Custom Records to respect permissions

Hello,

I must be missing something obvious, I have searches on custom records and I would like the email alerts on them to respect the permissions on the records.
Eg. I have users creating records on employee's that may have another user as the supervisor and that supervisor wants the alert, but I don't want the alert going to other users who would be otherwise unable to view the record due to permissions (long winded there -sorry!).

So in a way I want an alert, which is record is related to one of my subordinates.

How do I do that?
