Can the GL account associated to an item for a customer invoice be modified by a script?

I am researching whether this is feasible. I have the saved searches that give me the invoices that need to be modified. I want to change the account code on the invoice line detail - but when i look at the SOAP Schema i do not see line account listed anywhere... Having the limitation of revenue account being assigned at the item code level is very limiting given we want to know revenue by customer type in our Income Statement - Commerical Sales vs Retail Sales... Your thoughts are appreciated.
