Netsuite JDBC Cost and Pros/Cons

What is the cost of getting a NetSuite JDBC driver and what are the pros/cons of using this approach instead of using the traditional APIs. I am trying to weigh this approach against the cost of having consultants build REST APIs for us every time we need to pull another piece of data into our internal data warehouse.
