Import to remove Bill of Materials from an Assembly?

Looking to see if anyone has experience with removing a BOM from an assembly item through import ? I have tried to make the assembly BOM null but it wont update the item. Trying from the BOM perspective, it wont remove the assembly item it is tied to.

Need to make inactive the BOs and it wont let me due that unless they are not tied to an item.
