Email to new customers

I am going to join the throngs that can't figure out how to create the workflow they are after. It is at least comforting to look through the forum and see others also struggling with what I would have thought to be a simple task. Workflows are a great idea but it seems they only work well for certain processes or actions at the moment. Anyway here is what I am trying to accomplish.

[LIST]
[*]Sales Order is created
[*]If SO has an installation item then send email
[*]Email is sent to the contact with a role of buyer for the customer on the SO
