How to use a work flow for one field to update another?

Does anyone know how to do this?   I have a field that when a customer populates I want it to take their answer and populate another field.  Can this be done with a workflow or do I have to use a script?  Either would be fine if I had the directions.  Thank you so very much.:h_a_w:
