How can I get rid of the page number when outputting to HTML?

The default footer for the Standard Sales Order PDF/HTML Template shows the page number "x of x". When this template outputs to PDF format this works fine, but when outputting to HTML there are no page numbers, but the text "of" still shows on the document. Is there any way to check a variable and determine what the output will be, so I can hide that text on the HTML document? (If X then PDF else HTML)
