Need a custom "sales rank" field for each item

I need a custom "sales rank" field for each item.  We're going to include it in our product feed and our item search provider will use it to sort results putting the best sellers up top.

Any way to build that with a formula?  Would it be a nightly mass updated field?  Does anything similar already exist?
