addField Placement on Form

Hello all,
Has anyone had any luck in being able to place a field you add to a form using addField?  I am trying to keep the fields I am adding to a form in one column and the results of a search in a column next to these fields.  It seems I have no control over the fields placement.  I have played with the layoutType and breakType but they seem to have no affect.  How do I keep my fields in one column?
