Netsuite optimisation

I recently had a Netsuite contractor comment on our instance saying "this account was way slower than any of the accounts I've worked with in the past!"

This got me wondering - Is there any best practices in data configuration which keep things fast?

For example, We have heaps of custom records on items could this make things run slower?

Should we try to inactivate old items?
