Stopping change of prospect to customer by a sales order

We use a $0 sales order to send samples to prospects, however as soon as a sales order is processed, the prospect changes to a customers.

I understand the logic for that to happen, but is there any way to override, or send samples from inventory at no cost other than a sales order?
