How many item records is too many?

We are weighing the option to reuses a generic non-inventory item versus creating a new one each time.  The generic approach would lead to an item master of about 15K.  Given our history, if we create a new non-stock item each time we will be at well over 100K in five or six years.

I'm just curious ... but would anybody mind telling me how many item records you have? 10K, 25K, 50K, 100K?  Any concerns such as performance issues at the 50K or 100K mark?
