Best practices when implementing parent/child relationship for customers in NetSuite

Dear friends,

I am currently researching 'impact of enabling Parent / Child relationship for Customer records'. I have read the thread  in UG. Would you be able to guide me about the best practices for creating parent child relationships in NetSuite. What are its advantages. Plus if I can get a very abstract detail on datamodel in NetSuite for parent child relationship, that would just be awesome.
I apologize for dumping such a huge request. But I have looked all around, I still do not have concrete information.
