How to mass modify Item Number/Name?

We are very unhappy about our Item Name/Number system and would like to change the Item Name/Number we are using to a different one. What I don't want to do is edit 5000+ items in a web browser I want to be able to do it via a mass update or csv import.

I cannot find any documentation on how to do this. Please can some post a walk through.
